Technical debt is the future work or cost created by earlier technology decisions, shortcuts, or deferred maintenance. Managing it begins with understanding where it exists and how it affects reliability, security, and delivery.
Inventory aging systems, unsupported dependencies, duplicated processes, and workarounds. Record their owners, business dependencies, and known limitations so that teams can assess the consequences of leaving them unchanged.
Prioritize remediation according to risk, business impact, cost, and the effort involved. Assign responsibility and include technical debt work in planning rather than treating it as an undefined task for later.
Review progress with both technical and business stakeholders. Track whether changes reduce incidents, support burdens, or delivery delays, and revisit priorities as systems and organizational needs change.
